Emma Fedora Cooper and family

After many years of searching I have finally been able to piece together a bit more of Emma Fedora Cooper's story! More research pending on Cooper family prior to 1850 in Painted Post N.Y.. I know that there were many Cooper's settled there in this time and will post as I make sense of them.

Merril F Cooper 33 grocer (father)
Uviletta Cooper 29 (mother)
Havilia A Cooper 29 (aunt?)
Mary E Cooper 5
Catherine A 5/12

Emma Fedora Cooper was born 23 Oct 1857 in Gibson, N.Y., a small hamlet on a feeder canal for the Chemung Canal system next to big city Corning, Steuben Co. N.Y.. Father M.F. Cooper is the local Postmaster and Claim Agent, as advertised in local newspapers and the local 1868/9 Gazetteer and Business Directory.

These census takers are killer when it comes to spelling and Emma's mother's name is never spelled the same. I am going to give you what is published.

Merrit F head of household
"Uvilalia" mother
"Orville" sister
Mary E sister

1860 census Corning, Steuben Co...
Urettia 37
Mary E 15
Catharin O 10
Jane 8/12

1865 census Corning, Steuben Co... Merritt Cooper is now Justice of the Peace. This census was taken during the Civil War. Within Merritt's family lives a son-in-law who is a reenlisted soldier and a daughter who is a 20 year old widow.

MF Cooper 53
UVioletta 48
Emma 13
Cordelia 11
William (Marshall) 8 (died of consumption 1892, Hope Cemetery)

1875 census Corning, Steuben Co...Merritt died in 1874. Here is his widow with two of their children. Grandma Emma is 18 and married.

The family of Albert C and Catherine (Cooper) Rose lived directly across the street from MF Cooper's Post Office in Gibson, N.Y.. I believe that Albert was the cousin of Hiram Rose. Hiram's son was Robert Henry Rose, who married Emma Fedora Cooper.

This is Robert Henry and Emma Fedora Rose in the 1880 Corning census. At this point you may see a bit of their story on the Rose page. I will do a post on the Robert Henry Rose family next.
